Appropriate Assistive Technology

Publicado em 25/09/2013
Despite key mandates within the UN Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities (1994) and Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2006), access to assistive devices is still not universal. The need for assistive devices is increasing everyday due to the emergence of non-communicable diseases, conflicts, road traffic injuries and most importantly ageing populations. As people are living longer, they need more assistive devices to remain functional and productive. However, due to a lack of access to assistive devices, a majority of people, especially those who live in low and mid income countries, remain in isolation and lead a life at the mercy of others. Assistive devices, where available, are often not appropriate for low and mid income countries. The current trend of "Copy-Paste" Tech-Transfer from the North will never work in the South as realities are different. A "Northern Solution" is often counterproductive in the southern part of the world but a "Southern Solution" could be good for the whole world. The world needs a new concept of Appropriate Assistive Technology.

Technology assures deaf student learns surgery at UC Davis School of Medicine

Enviado em 30/11/2011
Amanda Mooneyham has a 90 decibel hearing loss in both ears, which is considered profound. She can read lips and, with the help of hearing aids, can hear speech as long as the words are spoken clearly and in her direction. In a hospital operating room, where physicians are more apt to mumble than use complete sentences and where everyone wears masks and directs their attention toward the patient, Mooneyham faced a frustrating — if not entirely ineffective — surgical learning experience.

Using tablet technology to link the sounds in the operating room to an off-site medical transcriptionist, Mooneyham is able to "listen" — in real time — to every word uttered by the surgeon performing the operation.

Universal design is the "design" of products and environments to be usable by anyone, not just individuals with disabilities, without the need for adaptation or specialized design. For the workplace, universal design is an approach that accommodates jobseekers and employees with disabilities through workplace design, while also reducing risks for employees who may develop disabilities during their career. Universal Design is an innovative business strategy that enhances workplace efficiencies and provides the best accommodation for all employees. Universal Design stations are accessible for people who have mobility, visual, auditory, speech, learning or language needs. For more information, please go tohttp://www.vadrs.org.

designing for accessibility - Testing for Accessibility

Publicado em 17/01/2014 Presenter(s): Alice Boxhall URL: https://lca2014.linux.org.au/schedule... More and more web developers are becoming aware of the importance of designing for accessibility—ensuring that their products are able to be used by as many users as possible, not just those who use the product in the same way as the developers do. However, even with the best designs, accessibility issues and regressions can still be a problem. Accessibility testing can be an awkward and even expensive process. Most accessibility tests are conducted manually and can't keep up with the pace of the web. And unfortunately, small accessibility regressions can have a drastic effect on usability—rendering it impossible for a user to navigate or interact with your web app. This session will introduce some open-source tools and techniques that have been used over a variety of projects to identify accessibility regressions. It will focus on tools that can be used in the browser itself and on automated testing strategies that enable developers to quickly iterate and improve their code. Though automated tests will never catch every regression, a common-sense approach that focuses on the most common accessibility problems can help to eliminate the pain of manual testing and make it easier to prevent, catch, and fix accessibility problems. http://lca2014.linux.org.au - http://www.linux.org.au CC BY-SA - http://creativecommons.org/licenses/b... euronews futuris : Un monde virtuel sans limites

(Cascaes, Cidade do Pedestre), etc.].
