This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The Leveraged Freedom Chair, an all-terrain wheelchair designed for developing countries was a winner of a 2010 R&D 100 award, and was named one of the Wall Street Journal’s top innovations in 2011.

Amos Winter is the Director of the Global Engineering and Research (GEAR) Lab at MIT, which focuses on the marriage of mechanical design theory and user-centered product design to create simple, elegant technological solutions for use in highly constrained environments.

Tish Scolnik is the CEO and co-founder of GRIT, a social enterprise that created the Leveraged Freedom Chair (LFC), an all-terrain wheelchair for developing countries.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
